Hey everyone,
I'm having some trouble with my 2012 Ford Fiesta, and I'm hoping to get some advice. A week ago, I noticed that the car was having intermittent starting issues. Now, it's getting progressively harder to start.

What I've Checked So Far:
  • Battery
  • Ground connections
  • Starter
Symptoms:
  • When the car does start, it runs perfectly fine.
  • The issue occurs when I turn the key to the start position (III) on the ignition. It doesn't click or even try to start.
  • There's a wrench symbol that appears on the dash.
  • If I leave the key in the on position (II) for anywhere from 45 seconds to 5 minutes, the wrench symbol disappears, and the car starts just fine.
Questions:
  • Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this issue?
  • Could I diagnose this with an OBDII scanner, or would it be best to take it to the dealership?
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

So as time goes on, it seems to get a little worse. I have an appointment scheduled with the dealership next week, so maybe that will give some answers. Currently I just leave my spare key in the II position about 15 minutes before I need to go to work and it has been holding up so far.

IF you have an OBD scanner, try looking for evidence to narrow down this condition as the wrench light appears and stays on.

Operate the scanner to bring up the I/M Monitors - and see what is READY and NOT READY and N/A (Not Applicable)

This might help tell you which sub-system of the vehicle has the electrical (which this sounds like) problem and make an appointment for cleaning up grounding bond points and even further inspection and cleaning of the wiring of corrosion of the affected system(s).
