Hope yall had Merry Christams !!

Hi there guys , i been wondering if any of yall had the stretch belt smoke for a min like it just sliding on top of the pulley, then is fine once you shut it off then back on

of course this wasn't just random , i was checking the new update on my scanner and decided to see that ford oem enhance was, with the engine on, tells you to turn wheel to the left ,

press and depress brake pedal and cycle override switch if equipped, while on the process the car will idle to 1500rpms , and stay there for few mins then comes back down to normal once complete .

In the mid of it , i get a stench smell like rubber burning , then i see smoke, shut the car off come around and see a straight line marked all the way around from the bottom cover ,parts

of the engine and ac hose , and i mean straight line like a stencil was used . i turned the car back on let idle for 5 mins and it was fine. I can only assume the high idle plus having the

steering fully to left put an additional load on the alternator ,since it does not have conventional P.S.Pump or the clutch on the a/c even tho it does not work but spins freely and i had

heat on medium on the vent side (left on the a/c control dial )rather than defrost , might have cause it to skip a rotation ( i know does not make much sense ,but who knows).

I will test drive the car tomorrow and see if anything happens , i moved it around the yard and parked it back and was fine , just wanna make sure since i need it for work Monday

the belt is but a year old and you can still read the numbers clear as day, and timing job was done 4 years ago or around 41k miles back, then of course crappy cold weather makes rubber shrink a little , definitely had a combination of factors for me to be fooling around doing tests that the car didn't need , i know lol " if is not broke don't fix it " XD

I had just finish doing same test on a 2010 Expedition and nothing smoked , however engine was at operation temp on that one , Fiesta not so much ..

Wondering on yalls input [dunno]

The 2011 - if it's got that EPAS Electronic Power Assist Steering - then the "smoke" may have been from the current draw, and the belt getting caught by the alternator pulley due to the demand - the belt kept going - but the pulley didn't - then it tries to get back on track and spin once the draw is less so the pulley and belt "grab" and start the charging process.

It might mean you have an Alternator on the way out - the tension belt pulls the alternators pulley towards the direction of the spin - draw (the drag on the pulley would be towards the crank pulley) as it tells the belt I'm not going to move easily - so if the alternator tries to put more power into the system - the pulley slows down, drags against the belt against the counter-forces of the EMF it needs to push into the coils - the stator and rotor can "strike" in a given instance and that is due to free bearing play - you don't always see this or even can feel it when you turn it by hand - because it has no load on it to draw against.

Good news
I took the car on a 50mile round trip and had it up to 80mph and it was fine.
Let's just call it operator error on my behalf, the alternator output was normal and the temperature as well .

Thanks for the info!
